FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NORMAN, OK – Precollegiate Programs at University of Oklahoma Outreach offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore the challenges and rewards of university life this summer through the Field Studies in Multidisciplinary Biology Summer Academy. Students may choose to attend one of four sessions scheduled during the weeks of June 10–16, June 1–7, July 8–14, and July 15–21, where they will have the chance to study and research organisms in their natural habitats.
All expenses, including room, board, supplies, books and field trip costs will be provided for each academy student, and all Oklahoma public and private high school students who will enter their junior or senior year in the fall of 2007 are eligible to apply.
Academy students will participate in lectures and discussions on research methodology, the philosophy of science, ethics in science and laboratory-based experiences, seminars on designing field projects, writing scientific research papers and extensive field studies utilizing nature as the classroom.
University staff and outstanding secondary teachers make up the diverse group of scientists, teachers and researchers for the academy. The sessions will be held at the University of Oklahoma Biological Station on Lake Texoma. Students will be housed in residence halls and supervised by adult counselors living on the same floor. Meals will be served in the station cafeteria. Travel expenses to and from the academy location and incidental, personal expenditures are the responsibility of the student.
Highlighted activities for the academy include developing insect and plant collections, learning to use dichotomous keys and identifying plants, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
