FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NORMAN, OK –  A partnership between the University of Oklahoma, The Harris Foundation and the ExxonMobil Foundation will benefit Oklahoma Native American and other underrepresented public and private middle school students this summer through an academic camp. Precollegiate Programs, a department within OU Outreach, is offering “Earth Cycles: A Whole-Earth Approach to the Geosciences” June 8-20 for those students grades 6-8, at no cost to the students.

The Earth Cycles academic camp will provide students the opportunity to study the geosciences through a core curriculum based on science, technology, engineering and math education. Students will participate in class discussions, perform lab research and computer work, go on field trips and much more, which will contribute to their learning about the connection between the science concepts of the origin of rocks and minerals, and the Native American “Sacred Circle.”

Instructors include OU faculty and outstanding secondary teachers. Students will live in a residence hall on the OU campus, and meals will be served in Couch Cafeteria. All expenses, including room, board, supplies, books, field trips and recreational activity expenses will be provided for each Earth Cycles student accepted. All Oklahoma Native American and other underrepresented public and private middle school students entering grades 6-8 in fall 2008 are eligible to apply. The application deadline is April 25.
