NORMAN, OK The University of Oklahoma Outreach and Precollegiate Programs will offer two summer academies for mathematics, science and multidisciplinary studies for students entering their junior or senior year in the fall 2008.

The Field Studies in Multidisciplinary Biology academy will run June 22-27, 2008. Academy students will participate in activities specifically designed to meet the needs of academically talented, career-oriented high school students. Students will study and research organisms in their natural habitats through lectures, discussions, laboratory based experiences, seminars and extensive field studies. University staff and outstanding secondary teachers make up the talented and diverse group of instructors for academy.

Field Studies academy students will be housed at the OU Biological Station residence hall located on Lake Texoma. Meals will be served in the station cafeteria. The $525 cost covers instruction, housing, meals, supplies, books and field trips. The deadline to apply is April 30 and a $50 refundable deposit is required with the application. A limited number of financial need scholarships are available for the Field Studies academy.  To receive a scholarship application, please call (405) 325-6897.

The Bridges to College Math, Science and Engineering academy will run July 20-25, 2008. Participating students will get a taste of OU campus life as well as a hands-on experience in some basic areas of mathematics that under gird the college study of physics and engineering. These areas include probability, logic, statistics and calculus. The one-week academy is directed by Dr. Richard Neal, recipient of campus-wide awards for teaching in the OU Mathematics Department.

OU summer academy students will be housed in a residence hall and meals will be served in Couch Cafeteria. All expenses, including room, board, supplies, instruction, books and field trips will be covered in the academy fee. The cost is $525 for resident students and $475 for commuter students. The application deadline is April 15 and a $50 refundable deposit is required with application.
