NORMAN, OK – The University of Oklahoma Outreach’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in partnership with the Medieval Fair, Oklahoma’s largest weekend event, is offering A Medieval Experience, a free opportunity to explore the Middle Ages guided by experts in the, history, religion, art, architecture and music of the historical time period.
The six-day seminar will include presentations focusing on, St. Frances, St. Dominic and the Spirit of the Middle Ages (presented by Dr. Tom Boyd), London in the Time of Chaucer (presented by Allison Palmer), The Black Death (presented by Roberta Magnusson), Meadhalls, Moats and Monasteries (presented by Eleanor Weinel) and Medieval Music (presented by Miranda Arana and Steve Vanlandingham).
The educational seminar will cast a light on the enduring allure of the medieval period through the presentation of these incredible informational sessions. Seminar guests will have the opportunity to hear from scholars who will illuminate the period in a manner that will help guests to better understand this fascinating era in history. The seminar will be capped off with a grand finale trip to the Medieval Fair, scheduled for April 4, 5 & 6 at Reaves Park in Norman, for an up close and personal view of the Middle Ages.
“We are very excited about assisting with these new educational opportunities and academic activities leading up to the Fair” said Linda Linn, Fair Coordinator. “There is so much interest in this period of history among the public.”
The Middle Ages, or the medieval period usually refers to a time between the fifth century and the 15th century. It was an era of dramatic change and diversity. Music, literature and art developed in complexity and sophistication. Philosophy posed questions that reconsidered humankind’s relationship with eternity; and science made extraordinary strides.
Session dates for the seminar are Feb. 19 and 26, March 4, 11 and 25, and April 4. Each session will be held from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Thurman J. White Forum, located at 1704 Asp Avenue on the OU Norman campus with the exception of the April 4 Medieval Fair field trip.
The lecture series is open to the general public and there is no cost to attend the seminar. However, registration is required by calling (405) 325-3488. You may also mail in your registration to: University of Oklahoma Outreach, 1600 South Jenkins Avenue, Norman, OK 73072. Please include your name, home address and home telephone.
