Television and Satellite Services provides full service production facility to campus community
FEATURE STORY - Spring 2007, Outreach-Reaching Out
University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Head Football Coach Bob Stoops on ESPN. Former engineering associate Dean Donna Shirley on CNN.
When any of these or other campus notables appears on live television, chances are Television Satellite Services (TVSS) is involved.
What began as a transmission outlet in 1989 for distance education courses in the College of Continuing Education has grown into a full-service television production division, part of University Outreach.
“We started evolving from simply a distance learning facility to now offering satellite uplink and fiber-optic transmissions, enabling us to distribute events and information from campus to anywhere in the world,” said TVSS Director/Producer Chris Turner. “We are a fullservice, concept-to-completion broadcast facility.”
Located in Cross Center Main 1600 S. Jenkins Ave., TVSS employs 10 full-time and eight part-time students and features two complete Avid digital production suites. Turner said those suites will soon be converted to Apple Final Cut Pro which runs more efficiently at an affordable price and will allow for continued nonlinear editing.
With its millions of dollars in equipment, TVSS has won a host of national awards including a Telly Award in 2000 for a motivational video produced for Coach Stoops and a Videographer Award for the documentary, Anatomy of a Fraud, produced in conjunction with the Oklahoma Department of Securities and Invest Ed™. In addition, most public service announcements for Oklahoma Department of Human Services are produced by TVSS.
Within the next 18 months Turner expects TVSS’ conversion to high definition capability to be complete and the operation will be moving to Blu-ray Disc or tape-less technology.
