The University of Oklahoma Outreach will offer “Designing Trails for Access,” a one-day instructional course to provide designers and builders guidance on planning sidewalks that are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations. The interactive course will be held Friday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa Schusterman Center, Room 4320.

“This workshop combines useful tools to help professionals and community leaders understand their roles and responsibilities under the ADA with regard to sidewalk and trails,” said Richard Andrews, workshop facilitator and ADA specialist. “These tools include providing information on planning, public involvement, design and construction.”

Andrews has worked closely with several communities in Oklahoma to develop ADA compliant trails and sidewalks projects. He has overseen the development of federally funded pedestrian and bicycle-related programs, such as the Transportation Enhancement Program. He currently serves as ADA coordinator for Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT). His experience with ODOT and the ADA give him a unique insight into the transportation needs and concerns of Oklahoma communities.

The seminar also will address the obligation of communities to provide public access under ADA, assess the current condition of sidewalks and pedestrian facilities, how to enhance pedestrian mobility, independence, and safety and identify funding opportunities.

Workshop registration fee is $55. More information please contact 405-325-2848.
